The area chosen for the construction of the new sports hall in San Gervasio Bresciano (Bs), Italy, is particularly suitable to accommodate a sports facility of municipal and supra-municipal interest since it is strategically located with respect to the foreseeable catchment area. It is also in close connection with the neighboring school grounds: pupils will be able to make the short journey between the school and the sports facility through a space protected from motor vehicle traffic.

At the competitive and training level, the arena allows the practice of 5-a-side soccer, volleyball and basketball. Through the provision of platforms the facility can also be used for occasional and temporary events of numerous and additional sports activities such as artistic gymnastics, martial arts, boxing, and fencing.

New sports hall in San Gervasio Bresciano: the design

The main load-bearing structure of the roof consists of arches and connecting struts made of laminated wood all firmly anchored to the ground on a foundation perimeter to the playing field made of reinforced concrete.

The arched wooden structure is covered externally with a double semi-cylindrical shaped membrane closed at both ends by two semi-circular sails. The material used is a fabric specially designed for this type of use: high-tenacity polystyrene, coated with PVC-based compounds on both faces, treated with special protective films.
