In the heart of Rome, one of the capital’s most iconic locations has been restored to its former glory thanks to a redevelopment project that combines aesthetics, innovation, and sustainability: the gardens surrounding the Mole Adriana, better known as Castel Sant’Angelo, have been completely renovated with Bermudagrass Evergreen by Semillas Fitò, giving citizens back a green space of the highest quality, designed to be enjoyed all year round.

The project, part of the works for the Jubilee and coordinated by the Environmental Protection Department of Roma Capitale with the support of ANAS, involved the complete restoration of the green areas, the refurbishment of the footpaths, the planting of 90 holm oaks (Quercus ilex), the installation of new hedges, and the creation of a playground for children.

An innovative grass variety for an evergreen lawn

A distinctive feature of the Castel Sant’Angelo project is the use of the new hybrid variety of Bermudagrass Evergreen, selected in Australia and distributed in Italy by Bindi Secondo Srl under official license from Semillas Fitò. It is a vegetatively propagated Bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon x transvaalensis) that guarantees the highest level of technical performance.

With approximately 4,700 square meters of new lawn area, the goal was to create a durable, low-maintenance turf that would remain green even in the winter months, without the need for overseeding.

Evergreen is designed to meet the typical challenges of Mediterranean climates: excellent color retention at temperatures as low as 5°C, high tolerance to trampling, rapid recovery, and low water and nutrient requirements. It is an ideal lawn for high-traffic public spaces and historic settings where aesthetics and sustainability must coexist.

A shared project

The landscaping work was entrusted to Flaminia Garden Srl, while the turf rolls were supplied by Bindi Secondo Srl, with the genetic property of the Evergreen variety held by Semillas Fitò Italia Srl.

Officially presented on May 29 in the presence of the Mayor of Rome, Roberto Gualtieri, and Archbishop Rino Fisichella, the new gardens of Castel Sant’Angelo represent a virtuous model of urban redevelopment, in which the quality of the turf plays a central role in enhancing the entire monumental context.
