In terms of sustainability, Formula Prato® has introduced the innovative ONE-DNA™ Artificial Grass synthetic turf generation in the Italian market.

In recent years, urban regeneration has assumed a central role in the transformation of cities, aiming to improve citizens’ quality of life and promote environmental sustainability. Particular attention has been paid to play and sports areas for the promotion of a healthy and active lifestyle and more cohesive communities. Synthetic grass has established itself as an efficient material in the realization of projects to enhance urban centres and suburbs. Increasingly important, therefore, is the use of certified synthetic turf that can guarantee not only the safety and durability of surfaces, but also compliance with strict environmental standards.

ONE-DNA™ Synthetic Grass and certified sustainability by Formula Prato®

Certifying environmental performance has become essential to assess the true sustainability of a project. For products such as synthetic turf, where the selection of raw materials and production methods can have a significant impact on the environment, adopting concrete, verifiable and comparable tools to analyse one’s own environmental impact is now essential.

Thanks to its one-polymer composition of 100% Polyethylene, designed for upcycling at end-of-life recycling, and an innovative, energy-efficient yarn thermo-fixing technology, this product is a pioneer in the artificial grass industry. Its sustainability is certified by the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and the Environmental Product Declaration (EPD), already in line with the European Green Deal 2030 directives.

Life Cycle Assessment (LCA): ONE-DNAâ„¢ Artificial Grass was subjected to a meticulous quantification of its environmental impact such as greenhouse gas emissions, resource consumption, ecotoxicity throughout its life cycle, from raw material extraction, production, use and recycling. This collection of data and assessments was subsequently documented in a report that complies with ISO guidelines and standards for LCA reporting.

The Environmental Product Declaration (EPD)

Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) are objective, validated and independent documents that describe the environmental performance of a product, according to international standards ISO 14025, ISO 14040 and ISO 14044, ensuring consistency, reliability and comparability of information.

Based on product life cycle assessment (LCA), ONE-DNA™ Artificial Grass has achieved the publication of Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) in several leading international environmental databases such as MRPI®, a recognized method for declaring the environmental aspects of construction products, and ECO PLATFORM, a database offering a wide range of Environmental Product Declarations, contributing to global efforts for a more sustainable future. ONE-DNA™ Artificial Grass has also been included in prestigious local environmental databases such as NBS Source in the UK, a platform that supports the architecture, engineering and construction industry.

What EPD means for urban artificial turf redevelopment projects

EPD certifications have a significant impact on urban artificial turf redevelopment projects because they help contractors, manufacturers, designers, installers and consumers make informed choices that contribute to the real sustainability of projects.

In particular EPD provide:

  1. Transparency: EPD clarify the environmental effects of artificial turf surfaces, increasing market transparency;
  2. Comparability: EPD make it easy to compare different artificial turf products according to their environmental impact, helping to select the most sustainable option;
  3. Market advantage: manufacturers offering EPD can differentiate themselves in the market by demonstrating a real commitment to sustainability;
  4. Promotion of innovation: the data and insights from EPD can encourage manufacturers to continuously improve their products and processes to optimise environmental performance;
  5. Consumer confidence: consumers who value sustainability can confidently choose EPD-certified artificial turf products, knowing that they meet high environmental standards.
