Viganò Pavitex: Bringing new life to old Surfaces

Viganò Pavitex’s action in the redevelopment of sports fields with the goal of sustainability.

The most often quoted definition of Sustainability comes from the UN World Commission on Environment and Development: “sustainable development meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” We’re talking about our children and grandchildren, thus a very serious matter that requires more facts than just talk.

At Viganò Pavitex, we agree that that resources are finite and should be used conservatively and wisely with a view to long-term priorities.

Transforming used surfaces is a first step. An old, unsatisfactory hard court can be the supporting base of a brand new Tops for Tennis® surface, thus preventing use of new land to build courts. And, our surfaces are playable 12 months a year – for many years.

Our two outdoor ““TOPS FOR TENNIS®” surfaces have in common a textile membrane that is firmly attached to a hard-surfaced support layer. While each of our surfaces varies in design according to the clay or sand that will be infilled, they have in common a structured needlepoint textile membrane.

The longer lasting is our textile membrane, the more sustainable is the surface.

Our textile membrane is composed of non-rotting fibers, thus, indefinite lasting quality if it were not played on.

Of course, it is played on. But a tennis court is submitted to high wear at only about 15% of the total surface. When excess wear takes place, normally between 5 – 8 years on our clay surface, we can remove the clay and the membrane, and replace it with new membrane and clay. The job requires a couple of days work for two courts, at a reasonable cost. We only need to dispose of 80 m² approx. of membrane.

And this operation can be renewed over the years.

Today, watering clay courts is a vital question. Clubs with both traditional clay courts as well as TOP CLAY® surfaces indicate an annual reduction in water consumption for TOP CLAY® in the order of 50/70%.

Play on our Top Sand® surface can in fact take place without any watering. In some regions this has saved the season for tennis clubs that have suffered bans on the use of water to fight drought conditions.
