The inclusive sports centre in Monfalcone, in the province of Gorizia, comes from the redeveloping and conversion of the former covered market.

The new, integrated sports centre, is intended primarily for use by people with sensory, motor, intellectual, cognitive and relational disabilities.

The building was designed for commercial use, arranged on two levels, with the basement intended to serve as a covered car park.

The ground floor, intended for use as a covered market, was a large, empty space with a single height, topped by a roof support structure made of metal space trusses.

The main internal work in the sports centre of Monfalcone essentially consists of the creation of the three areas into which the overall project is divided: the set of rooms intended as changing rooms and toilets for athletes, for which the per capita surface areas indicated by CONI (Italian National Olympic Committee) were used to calculate the dimensions; the large playing area with its storage rooms; the hall / entrance areas featuring additional rooms such as the facility support office, the bar and the infirmary.

The changing rooms and toilets for athletes and instructors, as well as the ancillary rooms, were constructed using a self-supporting, dry construction system.

Wooden sports parquet flooring was chosen for the playing surface, laid after applying a self-levelling compound to even out the unevenness caused by the removal of the existing tiles. The finished floor is flush with that of the changing rooms.

Markings have been provided for the sports of basketball / baskin, goalball and torball; there are also plans for areas for bocce and archery.

To help create an environment in which people with disabilities or reduced mobility can move independently and safely, careful and varied use of colour has been made along all paths and facilities of the sports centre in Monfalcone.
